Connecting Points – August 20, 2017

Random Act of Kindness Cards – Pick up a card every week from a display in our gathering areas. Use it to share the love of Christ in a surprising, creative, and unexpected way!

Need Prayer? – If you would like our prayer team to be in prayer for a concern, fill out the Prayer Request card found in each pew, call the church office, or enter it on the AFUMC website. The number for the Upper Room Prayer Line is 1-800-251-2468. This is staffed 24/7.

Youth Parent Meeting Tonight – There will be a Youth Parent Meeting tonight at 4:30 p.m. in the youth house.

Threat Awareness Workshop, Tonight! – Steve Skeen, one of our church members, is a well-known workshop leader for churches and other organizations in threat awareness. What would we do here if there were a fire? A tornado? An active shooter situation? Everyone is invited to this free 2-hour workshop. It is especially helpful for staff, greeters, ushers, Sunday School teachers, etc. but everyone can benefit. Join us in the fellowship hall tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Tomorrow, August 21 is the registration deadline for the Upper Room Prayer Retreat! Due to the requirements of the retreat center, August 21 is the deadline for your registration and $20 deposit made out to AFUMC. Our two-day prayer retreat is at the Upper Room in Nashville, our Methodist spirituality center and one of the most reverent locations in the country. Our Prayer Team will host this retreat September 21 & 22. We will meet at a restaurant in Nashville at noon on Thursday and return after lunch on Friday, spending one night in the newly remodeled Scarritt-Bennett accommodations adjacent to the Upper Room. You may either ride the church van or come in private vehicles. For more information on the speakers, see the Upper Room Prayer Retreat brochure in the gathering areas.

New Thursday Ladies Bible Study Class – As women of faith, pursuing Godliness should be right at the top of our list of things to accomplish each and every day. But, sadly, life sometimes gets in the way and our efforts in this pursuit fall far short of the target! Best selling author, Elizabeth George, helps us rediscover our ability to put God first in her book “Pursuing Godliness: A Study of 1 Timothy”. Beginning Thursday, August 17th, Nancy Stewart will lead this informative study every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Room 102. Please join us for food, fun, lively discussion and Christian fellowship as we discover all this study has to offer.

Small Groups are how we do “Care and Concern” Ministry! Are you part of at least one small group at Arab First UMC? Myles Teston shared a great Ministry Moment about how important small groups are for spiritual development. They are essential for the Christian walk. Do you know what else is important about small groups? It is through our small groups that we reach out to each other in “Care and Concern” ministry. We do have volunteers that share food on behalf of the whole church when there is a death in the church family. But small groups are how we care for each other during times of illness and the struggles of life. Get active in a new small group today, not just for yourself. Get involved so that you can be a part of blessing others.

New Sunday School Study – Join FAMILY Sunday School (Faith, Accountability, Mercy, Insight, Love, Yoked together) on Sunday, September 10 at 9:30 a.m. in room 117 when they embark on the new study, One: Woodlawn.  It only takes one person to start a revolution. What if that person is you? Utilizing footage from the movie Woodlawn, this study prepares your heart to experience and embrace a move of God, and seek the unity and revival that God can provide.  (Woodlawn is based on the true story of courage, strength, and football at the height of racial tension in Birmingham, AL, telling the story of Coach Tandy Gerelds, his running back Tony Nathan, and a high school football game that healed a city.)

Wednesday Night Menu – Our menu for Wednesday night will be meatloaf (mini pizzas for kids), baby potatoes, corn on the cob, green beans, cheese corn bread, and desserts. Join us at 5:00!

Candy for JAAM – You are invited to donate bags of individually wrapped candy for our JAAM program this season.  Examples are lifesavers, caramels, lollipops, laffy taffy, gum, Hershey kisses, smarties, and tootsie rolls. You can drop off donations in the church office.

The UMM (United Methodist Men) will be sponsoring “Fellowship, Food, and Football” this fall.  One Thursday night per month we will gather together for a meal, a message, and some good old college football.   The first meeting will be August 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the house of John York.  Our guest speaker will be Ken Burnett (Executive Director of the Northeast Alabama Fellowship of Christian Athletes).  We will take up a collection for FCA.  We are requesting that you reserve a spot by calling the church by the Wednesday of game week, but please come even if you forget to call.  Our next meetings will be October 5 and November 9, location TBA.

SHARPEN Your Skills and Cultivate Your Abilities! – Join us on Saturday, September 9th from 9 am to 12 noon as Arab First United Methodist Church hosts Creative Teaching, a program of the Adult Discipleship Team of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Anne Jolly from Conference will share techniques for teaching and facilitating Bible-based groups.  This free event is open to the surrounding churches and community.

Jeffrey Liebner Scholarship – Our Church Council announces the establishment of a new scholarship prompted by an initial donor. As with all the scholarships we offer annually under the direction of our Scholarship Committee, anyone may make a donation to the Jeffrey Liebner Scholarship Fund to help build up the principal. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a deserving high school senior or existing college student who has been an active participant at AFUMC in service and missions, is continuing their secondary education, and demonstrates financial need. This is a wonderful way to honor the life of a man who had a heart for missions. The congregation is invited to make donations.

Jennifer Saunders’ Blog – Our missionary, Jennifer Saunders, is currently in Greece on a ministry trip helping refugees. If you would like to read updates and stories about her mission, please check out her blog at

Jennifer Saunders Home Team Annual Yard Sale September 29th and 30th.  – We are in need of a building/room/barn where people can drop off donations on Saturday mornings, and the Home Team and volunteers can sort and price the items. If you have a place the Home Team could use for the month of September, please contact Jim Saunders at 200-6184 or text Patty Saunders at 200-6186 or email This is the Home Team’s biggest fund raiser and we need volunteers to help sort and set up. This is a “hands on” way of showing Jennifer our support.

Thank you from the Stebbins Family – On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone for the calls, prayers, messages, gifts and cards during the passing of our son, Jeff Stebbins. Thank you for your love and support. – Bill & Donna Stebbins
