Connecting Points – May 28, 2017

VBS Safe Sanctuary Training – Jerod Andrews will do another Safe Sanctuary training on Wednesday, May 31 at 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall.  This is mandatory for anyone who didn’t attend training in February and is going to volunteer for VBS/Summer Youth activities.

Church-Wide Picnic June 7 with Welcome Party for the James’s – Please bring a dish! Join us Wednesday, June 7 at Arab City Park for a church picnic with Pastor Nicky James and his wife Lynn as our special guests of preparing to serve as Associate Pastor. The picnic will be held in the large covered shelter and will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Methodist Men will be grilling the meat with attendees asked to bring a side dish.  Swimming will be available at the city pool from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Bingo with prizes will be available for adults.

Come to Opening Worship at Annual Conference! – This year, Annual Conference will be held in Huntsville again. You are invited to the opening celebration for this gathering of clergy and delegates from the approximately 750 churches of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. It will be on Sunday, June 4, at 4:00 p.m. at the Van Braun Civic Center (North Hall). Our choir will participate in the mass choir. Come and join us.

Church Office Closed – The church office will be closed on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day.

Random Act of Kindness Cards – Pick up a card every week from a display in our gathering areas. Use it to share the love of Christ in a surprising, creative, and unexpected way!

Upper Room Prayer Line – The phone number for the Upper Room Prayer Line is 1-800-251-2468. This line is staffed 24/7 and gives you an opportunity to pray with someone, no matter the time of day.

Bless Men and Women in Uniform with the Upper Room Devotional – One way you can celebrate Memorial Day is to provide devotionals to those who are serving in the military. Since World War II, the Upper Room has provided thousands of copies to those serving in the US armed forces. They presently send 45,000 copies of each issue to chaplains requesting the devotional guide for their ministries, and receive more requests than they can fill. You are invited to make a Memorial Day gift to the Upper Room chaplain’s ministry. A gift of $42 will provide an annual subscription of ten copies for one chaplain. You can give by calling 877-899-2781, ext. 7212.

There’s a New Key to the Kitchen! To help us be better stewards of our church kitchen, we have changed the locks on both the interior and exterior kitchen doors. The kitchen will now be locked when not in use. There is a small key box at the interior entrance containing the key for anyone who has permission to use it. Our kitchen manager, Terry Z., will keep the list of those who have access. If you would like to use the kitchen for your ministry, contact Terry at or 256-486-5183 to register and be given the code. Please be sure and lock the key back in the box after each use.

New Youth Space Opening Soon! – Our youth are incredibly important to our church and we are committed to provide them room to grow between now and a future building project! In June, we are redesigning the interior of the existing storage building on the back of our property (near the youth house) so it can help accommodate our expanding youth program. The youth group will for the first time have a large gathering place for worship, games, and activities. Lighting is being installed, emergency exit signs are being put up, storage is being consolidated to the side walls and covered by curtains, and a stage with new sound equipment and lighting is being set up.

Mission Meeting – Please come to room 112 (Class Of Our Redeemer) on Wednesday, May 31 at 6:00 pm to discuss how AFUMC wants to “do mission,” making plans as to how to proceed and make happen the knowledge and insights we gained at the Activate missions conference.  This invitation is open to all, including those that attended the Activate mission conference.

Would You Believe We Have a Car for Sale? A church family has donated the silver 2008 Ford Taurus parked near the church office. It is in in fairly good condition with 105,000 miles on it. We are making it available for sale at the church office for an asking price of $4,000. 100% of the price will go to the Building Fund. Thanks to the generous church family for a fun and creative way to help pay off our debt! Before we list it publicly for sale in a couple of weeks, we are making it available to friends and family of the church. Call the church office at 586-5792.

Operation Christmas Child – For the month of May, we are asking members to focus on bringing hygiene items. Just drop your donations in the marked boxes.

“Embracing Grace” Bible Study – Looking for a study group that challenges you to learn while also focuses on incorporating God’s word into everyday life? We have a class for you! The Thursday morning Women’s Bible study will start a new summer session beginning on June 15th. We will be studying internationally-known author, Liz Curtis Higgs’ book, “Embracing Grace”. Higgs has the ability to bring any topic to life and this book is no exception. She teaches us to let go of guilt, fear and regret by turning to God. Come join us at 10:00 a.m. every Thursday in classroom 101 for refreshments and lively conversation. We look forward to you joining us on June 15th! Nancy Stewart will be leading this study and if you have any questions please contact her directly at 256/586-0351.

Site Development and Debt Reduction ProgressCome by and have a look at the display in the gathering area. There is an explanation of the proposal there for your discussion and discernment. Our website also has a banner that links to the site development proposal. Due to your faithful giving, we only lack about $50,000 to have the ability to completely pay off our debt. This is amazing. In the coming months, we can start planning a note burning celebration! Keep it up! Our plan is to pay off the debt before embarking on a new building project.
