Connecting Points September 6, 2015

The Wednesday Night meal starts at 5:00 pm. The requested donation for meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children. September 9th will be hamburgers & hotdogs, potato salad, macaroni-corn casserole, and dessert.

A Book Club starting Tuesday September 8th at 10:30am is reading A Lineage of Grace (by Francine Rivers). The club will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. Each month the group will read a book written by a Christian author and gather for a discussion based on a list of guide questions for that particular book. At the first meeting on September 8, the group will get books for the month and make plans for future meetings. (A Lineage of Grace will be the first selection for the book club. This book consists of five stories of unlikely women chosen by God who changed eternity.) Suggestions for good books will be welcome. The Emmaus Cluster meeting will be Tuesday, September 8th, at 6:30 pm, at Old Brashiers Chapel in Arab.

Body 4 Believers Starting Thursday September 10th at 6:30 pm
This series of four classes promotes healthy eating with a spiritual component. Learn the weight loss information you need to match your determination to lose weight. Learn to eat smart and be a good steward of the body that God has provided you. (Course is free with option to purchase food items available.)

ServeFest – Come serve Jesus and our community by handing out bottles of water on September 12th, from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm at the Community Fair sponsored by the Historical Society. You can volunteer by signing up at the hospitality desk or calling the church office at 256-586-5792.

Steeple to Steeple – Walk down Main Street from Arab First Baptist Church to Arab First United Methodist Church on September 12th. All proceeds benefit Four Friends International and Blessings in a Backpack for Arab Elementary School. Please arrive no later than 7:30 am and park at Arab First United Methodist Church. Vans will be available to take you to the starting line at Arab First Baptist Church.

Financial Peace University (by Dave Ramsey) Starting Sunday September 13 at 10:55 am – We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents Biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you’ve dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! (Suggested class donation of $50.)

Study Committee has one “Town Meetings” left! – If we build something, what will it be? The Study Committee needs to hear your feedback. The purpose of the meetings is to share the initial list of priorities gleaned from our survey results and get feedback from you about what direction we are going. Every voice is important, so we need you to come! Town Meeting #3 (especially for youth, but all are welcome) – Sunday, September 13th, at 5:30 p.m. (Youth House)

The Young-in-Heart will resume their monthly meetings Thursday September 17th with a trip to Camp Sumatanga. Lee Michael will be driving the church van and leading a tour of the camp. We will be having lunch there and the cost is $10.00 per person. Please make your reservation at the Hospitality Desk. There are 14 seats available on the van, so indicate if you want one of them. The van will be leaving the church at 9:00 and returning about 3:00. If you care to drive, take Highway 231 through Oneonta and then follow the signs to the camp.

While Christmas is months away, needy children in our area must register with Christmas Coalition between September 8 -11 in order to qualify for help this Christmas. Volunteers are needed to complete this process. If God is leading you to serve in this way please contact Joy at

Jennifer’s Home Team Happenings – The HT is currently taking orders for sheets. These sheets are 1500 thread count and come in many decorative colors. They come in sizes from Twin up to King, including California King. All sizes are just $36.00 a set. We will be taking orders after services for the next 3 weeks.

It’s time to start thinking YARD SALE. The HT annual yard sale will be October 9th & 10th. Please drop off your donations at the church storage building Saturday mornings 9:30-12:00, or Sunday afternoons 12:00 to 1:00,starting Sept. 5th.

The Home Team always has an open invitation to anyone who would like to join us in this special mission around the world. Our purpose is to give others the opportunity to answer God’s call for this mission and to support Jennifer spiritually, emotionally, and financially during her time of service. The HT holds several fund raising/information events each year as well as providing care packages, letters, and cards. If you would like to join us or help with an event please join us for our regular meeting on the second Monday at 5:30, downstairs.

Exploring The Way (by Upper Room Ministries) Pastor Steve will be the facilitator. A prequel to the Companion in Christ foundational resource, this six week experiential study (plus preparatory meeting) provides an excellent introduction to the language of spiritual formation and some basic practices of the Christian spiritual life. (Suggested book donation of $5.)

Request for Sunday School Classes – Fall is here and we are excited about Sunday School! Adult Sunday School classes, please help us with our Sunday morning schedule by concluding Sunday School on time at 10:30 a.m. Classes are asked to release promptly to allow parents to pick up their children. Class members may of course socialize after class is released. Our children need to be picked up on time from their classes, and many of them help as acolytes or in other ways for worship, as do some of our adults. Remember that the Sunday School hour begins at 9:30 and concludes at 10:30. Thanks for your help!

As summer ends, please remember that the ministries of Arab First UMC continues, please support your church faithfully and generously. We are currently $54,312 below ministry budget.

Christmas shoe boxes for third world children – The Northeast District of the UMW have furnished shoe boxes. They will be available at the hospitality desk. A box can be filled for approximately $12 to $15 and will mean so much to a child. There will be a list of what can be sent with each box. Boxes need to be returned to the church by September 16th to be delivered to UMCOR. If you have questions please call Sherry Cushing at 256-796-0359.
