Circle #2 Meeting – Circle #2 will meet on Monday, September 11 at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall.
Methodist Women’s Group Meeting on Wednesday – The Methodist Women’s Group will be meeting on Wednesday, September 13th at noon in the fellowship hall.
Wednesday Night Menu – The menu for Wednesday, September 13th will red beans and rice, chicken fingers for the kids, cajun pork chops, fried potatoes, okra hush puppies, salad, and desserts. Dinner starts at 5:00 and classes at 6:00.
Volunteers Needed at UMCOR for Disaster Relief – On Saturday, September 16 at 8:00 a.m., volunteers of all ages will gather at AFUMC to go to the UMCOR Disaster Warehouse in Decatur. We will work until noon, have lunch in Decatur, and be home by 2:00 p.m. In addition to assembling kits and preparing supplies to be shipped, we will take any donated cleaning or hygiene supplies or assembled kits. See the UMCOR insert. Instructions to assemble entire kits can be obtained in the church office or on-line at http://www.umcna.org/disasterwarehouse.) Monetary donations can be made by making a check to AFUMC and noting “DISASTER RESPONSE” on the memo line. Please let the office know of your intentions to volunteer on September 16, 2017.
Dementia Awareness Sunday – Next Sunday, September 17th will be Dementia Awareness Sunday at Arab First UMC! You are invited to wear purple next Sunday.
Fall Sunday Night Bible Study – What better way to grow disciples than through Bible study?! Pastor Steve West will be teaching “Invitation to the Old Testament” on Sunday nights in room 102 from 6 to 7pm, starting on September 17. (This time coincides with Sunday night youth gathering). Explore the Old Testament’s story of Israel through the many “voices” of the Biblical text. Participants will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Old Testament and a renewed discovery of our identity in God. This is a short-term Disciple study (8 weeks) and connects with adults with little or much prior Bible experience.
District-Wide Prayer Meeting – There will be a district-wide prayer meeting at AFUMC on Tuesday, September 19th at 6:30 p.m. This is hosted by Rev. Tom Parrish and the Northeast District of the North Alabama Conference of the UMC.
Young-In-Heart – On Thursday, September 21 the Young-In-Heart, the Senior Adult Ministry of AFUMC will kick off its Fall season with a road trip to Huntsville’s Burritt on the Mountain, after our visit we will gather at nearby Galen’s for lunch. Admission to the museum is $9 and lunch off Galen’s menu ranges from $4 sandwiches to $10 meat and three plates. If you would like to go please sign up on the sign-up sheet or call the church office. They will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. on the 21st.
Jennifer Saunders Home Team Annual Yard Sale September 29th and 30th from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – All donations are welcome. Donations can be brought to the hallway outside of the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. Large items can be dropped off Thursday, September 28th from 7:00 – 3:00 p.m. If you would like to volunteer to help with sorting, setup, and day of sales, please contact Patty Saunders at 256-200-6186 or Jim Saunders at 256-200-6184. All proceeds from this yard sale will benefit Jennifer Saunders mission work with refugees.
Grace Place & AFUMC Nursery Book Fair – Grace Place Preschool and AFUMC Nursery are hosting an Usborne Book Fair from September 8 – 15, 2017. Samples of the books, teacher’s wish lists and a catalogue will be on display. Usborne books were designed so that children would enjoy reading. Take this opportunity to gift a book for a child in your family and the children in Grace Place Preschool and our nursery. Please fill in the order form completely and place cash, credit card information or check with the order form in a sealed envelope and place in the box marked “orders & payments”. Make checks payable to Usborne Books & More. The profits will enable us to receive even more books and supplies for Grace Place Preschool and AFUMC Nursery.
New Sunday School Study – Join FAMILY Sunday School (Faith, Accountability, Mercy, Insight, Love, Yoked together) on Sunday, September 10 at 9:30 a.m. in room 117 when they embark on the new study, One: Woodlawn. It only takes one person to start a revolution. What if that person is you? Utilizing footage from the movie Woodlawn, this study prepares your heart to experience and embrace a move of God, and seek the unity and revival that God can provide. (Woodlawn is based on the true story of courage, strength, and football at the height of racial tension in Birmingham, AL, and a high school football game that healed a city.)
