Random Act of Kindness Cards – Pick up a card every week from a display in our gathering areas. Use it to share the love of Christ in a surprising, creative, and unexpected way!
Need Prayer? – If you would like our prayer team to be in prayer for a concern, fill out the Prayer Request card found in each pew, call the church office, or enter on the AFUMC website. The number for the Upper Room Prayer Line is 1-800-251-2468. This is staffed 24/7 so you can pray with someone any time of day.
Backpack Blessing Today! – Today we will have a special morning of blessing our students and educators as we go back to school. All teachers and staff (from any school system) will be recognized in our worship services and prayed for! All students are invited to bring their backpacks and lay them at the altar as part of the blessing service.
Greeter and Usher Training! Training for the new expanded hospitality ministry is scheduled for Wednesday, August 9th at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 13th at 12:00 p.m. The training sessions are identical so you can choose the one best for you. We need your help! Do you have a willingness to smile, be friendly to others, and get involved on Sunday morning? This ministry requires a commitment of only one Sunday a month and we’re revamping this area for our church. A welcoming, loving church is part of the foundation of a healthy church and it needs members like YOU! This is also a great ministry for families to do together! Plan to come to the training and if you haven’t already, let the church office know you’d like to help.
Wednesday Night Dinners Resume on August 16th – Meal tickets will be available again this year. You can purchase them in the office or on Wednesday nights in the kitchen. This year we will offer 20 adult meals for $110.00, 10 adult meals for $60.00 and 10 child meals for $40.00. Once you purchase your ticket, we date it and keep it in the kitchen for you. When you come through the line for dinner, just let Terry Z. know how many people are eating, so she can mark them off. This makes dinner more convenient for you instead of keeping up with cash and checks. Thank you and we look forward to a great year!
O’Cannenbaum Food Collection! – For our first Fall Wednesday night supper, August 16, make sure to bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items. There will be no charge for the supper but, a collection of monetary and food donations will be taken to help replenish the food bank at TESA. And to make the collection more exciting, we will attempt to build a Christmas tree of cans! Do you know that 600 to 800 canned goods can build a five foot Christmas tree? Can AFUMC live up to the challenge? Can we build an even taller tree? (FYI–10,000 cans will build a fourteen foot tree.) Bring your cans (and yourselves) and join us on Wednesday, August 16.
Youth Parent Meeting – There will be a Youth Parent Meeting, Sunday, August, 20th at 4:30 p.m. in the youth house.
Threat Awareness Workshop, August 20! – Steve Skeen, one of our church members, is a well-known workshop leader for churches and other organizations in threat awareness. What would we do here if there were a fire? A tornado? An active shooter situation? Everyone is invited to this 2-hour workshop. It is especially helpful for staff, greeters, ushers, Sunday School teachers, etc. but everyone can benefit. This workshop is free (he usually does this for a living) and is on Sunday, August 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
SHARPEN Your Skills and Cultivate Your Abilities! – Join us on Saturday, September 9th from 9 am to 12 noon as Arab First United Methodist Church hosts Creative Teaching, a program of the Adult Discipleship Team of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. Anne Jolly from Conference will share techniques for teaching and facilitating Bible-based groups. This free event is open to the surrounding churches and community.
Prayer Retreat at Upper Room in Nashville – Here’s your opportunity to see the renowned life-size wood carving of the Last Supper, walk through serene gardens, and spend time in the “Alone with God” prayer room! Our two-day prayer retreat is at one of the most reverent locations in the country. Our Prayer Team will host this retreat at the Upper Room in Nashville, September 21 & 22. We will spend one night in the newly remodeled Scarritt-Bennett accommodations adjacent to the Upper Room. We will take the church van as well as private vehicles. For more information see the new brochure in the gathering areas.
Jeffrey Liebner Scholarship – Our Church Council announces the establishment of a new scholarship prompted by an initial donor. As with all the scholarships we offer annually under the direction of our Scholarship Committee, anyone may make a donation to the Jeffrey Liebner Scholarship Fund to help build up the principal. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a deserving high school senior or existing college student who has been an active participant at Arab First UMC in service and missions, is continuing their secondary education, and demonstrates financial need. This is a wonderful way to honor the life of a man who had a heart for missions. The congregation is invited to make donations toward the Jeffrey Liebner Scholarship Fund.
Operation Christmas Child – For the month of August, we are asking members to focus on bringing clothing items. Just drop your donations in the marked boxes.
JAAM Information – JAAM (Jesus, Arts, and Me) begins August 16 for the 2017-2018 year. Please be sure to complete a registration for your child if they are interested in participating. Registrations forms are located in the office, on the sign-up table and outside the Children’s Director Office.
Candy for JAAM – Church family would you donate bags of individually wrapped candy for our JAAM program this season. Examples are lifesavers, caramels, lollipops, laffy taffy, gum, Hershey kisses, smarties, and tootsie rolls. You can drop off donations in the church office. Just let Jessica know it is for JAAM.
Thank you from the Hinds Family – On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone for the calls, prayers, messages and cards during the passing of our father, Billy Hinds. A BIG thank you to the ladies that provided the wonderful meal after the service; it was greatly appreciated by the entire family. We can’t say enough about our church family and the love and support you have shown us and our dear mother, Caroline, during this difficult time. God Bless – Jill, Doug, and Gina
