Connecting Points – December 25, 2016

Church Office Holiday Closing Dates – The Church Office will be closed December 26th for the Christmas Holiday and will also be closed January 2nd in observance of New Year’s Day.

Prayers for the Ghana Mission Team – Our Ghana Mission Team from Arab First UMC will leave tomorrow, December 26 and return on January 5. This year, we will see the completed barn that we worked on last year and we will be improving the water and filtering system as well as visiting the Eugemot orphanage and doing food relief in villages. We will be visiting the Methodist Church in Hohoe where Pastor Steve has been asked to preach on January 1. Members of the Ghana mission team are Steve West, Marc Scarbrough, Lianna Smith, Leslie Smith, Lisa Sloan, Tarah Sloan, Hannah Shirley, Josh Millwood, Jill Hinds, Caitlyn Scarborough, Dr. Robert Burton, Brian ODell, and Lois ODell. Please keep us held in your prayers. Pastor Steve will be posting pictures on Facebook each day to help us keep in touch with those we are praying for.

Volunteers Needed for Room in the Inn on Christmas Night – We need some extra help tonight when Arab First UMC hosts “Room in the Inn”. Please let John Richey know if you are willing to make Christmas bright for neighbors who are less fortunate (256-931-6088).

Flower Calendar for 2017 – Please get in touch with the church office to reserve Sundays on the altar flower calendar for 2017. Fresh flowers bless our worship life and are a wonderful way to do something in honor or memory of someone special. Here are the details: There are two arrangements each Sunday (you may reserve one or both). The first one to reserve an arrangement for a Sunday chooses the florist for that Sunday. Buddy’s Flowers provides a standard, classic arrangement, and costs $35 per arrangement. Scott’s Urban Earth can provide a standard $35 arrangement or coordinate with you to provide a custom-designed arrangement.

End of the Year Giving – This week is our last chance to get caught up on our giving for 2016 if we’ve gotten behind. We have several end-of-the-year missions and ministries to support and we need your help! Please give generously this week. The deadline is Friday, December 30, at noon for your giving to go toward ministries of the 2016 budget and to appear on your 2016 giving statement for tax purposes. You may bring gifts by the church office. Thank you for your faithful support of Arab First UMC!

Confirmation 2017Confirmation classes will start on Sunday, January 8th @ 4PM in the Fellowship Hall.  These classes are especially for any person currently in 5th grade, and is open to any older youth who haven’t gone thru the classes before.  If you are interested in attending, please talk to Heather Tallent, Lee Michael, or Pastor Steve for more information.

War Room Bible Study – The War Room Bible Study will begin on January 8th. This is based on the award winning movie, War Room. This study is designed to help challenge you to establish a battle plan of prayer for your family. Please join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30am in room 117. This is facilitated by Josh and Mary Shumate.

JAAM Kids – JAAM is on Christmas Break and will resume on January 11th.

Leadership Summit – The 2017 Church Council is asked to mark your calendars for Sunday, January 22, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm for our annual Leadership Summit with the pastor. The meeting will be in the church fellowship hall. We will be evaluating progress on goals set at our last Leadership Summit and developing ministry goals and objectives for this coming year. All Church Council members are asked to attend.

President of Birmingham-Southern College to Visit Our Church – On Sunday, January 22, our special guest for the morning will be Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith, the new president of United Methodist related Birmingham-Southern College. She will be with us for morning worship services, so be sure and plan on attending!

Announcing Youth Space Expansion – Arab City Council approved the plan of our Church Council to attach a portable classroom to the back of our Youth House. This is a temporary measure to accommodate our growth in youth ministries while we finish paying off debt and begin plans for a future building. The cost for the used portable classroom was a discounted price. When the building is resold after temporary use, the proceeds will go back into the Building Fund. The classroom will be in place after the first of the year. Landscaping will be added to shield it from view.

Wednesday Night Dinners Grow! – This past couple of years,
Wednesday night dinners have consistently grown in meal quality and attendance. We have about 125 people each week enjoying an excellent meal due to the fine efforts of our kitchen manager, Terry Z., and her gang. Our Finance Team has increased the suggested donation to $7 for adults and $5 for children. This begins in January, in order to keep the quality strong.

Office Sitters Needed – The Church Office is in need of office sitters to answer the phone during services and provide directions/help if needed. Please consider volunteering one Sunday a month during a service time which you don’t attend. This is such an important service to our church. Please contact the church office if you’d like to be added to the list of volunteers.

Jennifer Saunders Home Team Sheets – If you ordered sheets from the Jennifer Saunders Home Team, you can pick them up in the office.  If you need to pay for your sheets, you can leave a check in the office, also.
