Connecting Points – December 4, 2016

Communion is served in the Prayer Chapel each Sunday morning between services (9:00 – 9:15) and (10:30 – 10:45).

Soup Lunch is today!  – The Ghana mission team will be cooking and serving a soup lunch. We will have a variety of soup with crackers, cornbread, chips or rolls. You can dine in, or we will have convenient take-out containers.  The cost is only $5 and will go towards our mission. The United Methodist Men sponsored breakfast for us on this day so you can make it a day free from cooking and help the Ghana Mission Team at the same time!

JAAM Christmas Program & Meal is tonight! – The JAAM Christmas program is tonight. The whole Church is invited! The program is at 5:00PM with a potluck following. PROGRAM – Children should be in the music room at 4:30.  No special dress is required for that evening. POTLUCK – Meat, tea and water will be provided. Parents of: K’s please bring caprisuns for kid’s drinks. 1st-3rd grade, please bring a side dish and 4th and 5th please bring desserts.

Family Christmas Tree – You are invited to add a family ornament to our Family Christmas Tree, which is located next to the Prayer Room in the Gathering Area. You may take your ornament home after Christmas or leave it to be stored with the other ornaments and used again next year on the Family Tree.

Cookies Needed for Christmas & Beyond – Cookies and sweets are needed to serve at Christmas and Beyond on Saturday, December 10 at 7:00am.  Please contact Dawn Liebner if you can help provide them.

Pastor’s Discretionary Fund – Please give generously to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund today at the communion rail. We have helped many in recent days (including some special needs in our church family) and the funds need to be replenished before the holidays. Thanks for your help with this important ministry!

Office Sitters Needed – The Church Office is in need of office sitters to answer the phone during services and provide directions/help if needed. Please consider volunteering one Sunday a month during a service time which you don’t attend. This is such an important service to our church. Please contact the church office if you’d like to be added to the list of volunteers.

Blessings’ Gift Idea – With Christmas fast approaching, remember that shirts (Arab First United Methodist Church logo on the front, the AFUMC stained glass window on the back) are available for $15 each. Adult shirts are available in small, medium, large, x-large, and 2X in black, yellow, gold, and teal with children’s shirts also available in black. Canvas totes are available for $10 each. All
proceeds supports Blessings here at AFUMC. (Contact Dawn Liebner if interested. Items can be found in the upstairs’ library/office area.)

Room in the Inn Volunteers will be needed on 12/25, 1/29, 2/26, and 3/26. We will need setup crew, van/bus driver, overnight host, food crew, and activities director. We are asking each Sunday school class to sponsor the meals (supper, breakfast and a snack).  Please contact John Richey at 256-931-6088 or Marc Scarbrough at 256-714-4627 to help.

Advent Coffee Hour with the Pastor – Pastor Steve invites anyone who wants to come for the four weeks of Advent! We will meet in the fellowship hall on Tuesdays at 4:00 for coffee and a snack and study “ADVENT[ure] – A Journey through the Christmas Story” created by the North Alabama Conference Discipleship Team. We continue this Tuesday at 4:00 pm. There is no preparation between classes. Pastor Steve will lead us in an opening activity, a video segment from one of our conference’s clergy women, a spiritual practice, and a grace moment as we explore Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem, the Shepherds at the Stable, and the Magi finding the Messiah. Anybody can come anytime!

Kindergarten & Preschool Short Program – Kindergarteners and preschool will share a short program Wednesday night, December 7th at 6:00PM. Children should be in the music room at 5:30.  No special dress is required for the program.  (Will last about 15 minutes)

The Bishop Comes Next Sunday! Bishop Debra Wallace Padgett will preach here on December 11th. It is a special occasion when the Bishop comes! She will preach for all three services. Come and meet the leader of the 750 churches in the North Alabama Conference of the UMC.

JAAM will sing December 11th – Sunday, December 11th JAAM will sing in 9:30 and 10:55 worship when the Bishop is here.  We will
take children from Sunday School to sing at 9:30 and then they will sing the anthem in worship service at 10:55.

The Young-in-Heart’s Christmas Lunch – The annual catered Christmas lunch meeting will be December 15th at 10:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Terry Z will cater the meal. Everyone loves her cooking! Tickets will be pre-sold. They are $10.00 each. For tickets see Janet Calhoun or Dee Rowley or to be contacted, leave your name and phone number on the reservation sheet on the sign-up-table. Jimmy Howard will tell the Christmas story and we will sing Christmas Carols.

 The Hart Anniversary ReceptionThe Hart’s will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on December 18th at 2:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Confirmation 2017Confirmation classes will start on Sunday, January 8th @ 4PM in the Fellowship Hall.  These classes are especially for any person currently in 5th grade, and is open to anyone older who hasn’t gone thru the classes before.  If you are interested in attending, please talk to Heather Tallent, Lee Michael, or Pastor Steve for more information.

War Room Bible Study – The War Room Bible Study will begin on January 8th. This is based on the award winning movie, War Room. This study is designed to help challenge you to establish a battle plan of prayer for your family. Please join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30am in room 104. This is facilitated by Josh and Mary Shumate.

Poinsettias – The youth are selling poinsettias as a fundraiser to be placed in the sanctuary for the cantata on December 18th and 19th.  Poinsettias can be placed in honor or memory of loved ones.  The cost is $20 with youth earning a portion for each poinsettia sold.  Poinsettia orders will be taken until December 14th, for names to be included in the poinsettia honor/memory book available during the Christmas Cantata.

The Jennifer Saunders Home Team – The home team is selling sheets to support Jennifer’s mission work in Spain. These are 1800 thread count sheets available in five sizes. They are $40 for a set and include two pillowcases. Extra pillowcases can be purchased for $10 for a set of two. Purchases can be made Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and daily in the church office.  Orders will arrive in time for Christmas! Contact Jennifer at 256-640-7456 for details.

 The supper menu for Wednesday Night, December 7th is Chili, Broccoli Cheese Soup, Hot Dogs/Chips, and Desserts.

Wednesday Night Dinners Grow! – This past couple of years,
Wednesday night dinners have consistently grown in meal quality and attendance. We have about 125 people each week enjoying an excellent meal due to the fine efforts of our kitchen manager, Terry Z., and her gang. Our Finance Team has increased the suggested donation to $7 for adults and $5 for children. This begins in January, in order to keep the quality strong.
