Connecting Points April 24, 2016

The Wednesday Night meal starts at 5:00 pm. The requested donation for the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children. April 27th, the meal is hamburgers and hot dogs, french fries, coleslaw, and desserts.

In April, Circle 6 will be hosting a drive for the North Alabama Cloth Diaper Bank! We are asking for donations of flour sack towels (found in the kitchen towel section of Walmart), flat cloth diapers (new or good used condition), and $1 to purchase new cloth diaper covers. There are collection baskets at each entrance, and dollars can be placed in a collection jar in the office.

April 27th Tornado Day of Remembrance – On Wednesday, April 27th (the five year anniversary of 63 Alabama tornadoes) our prayer room will be available all day from 8:00 – 4:30 for anyone in the community to pray. Our church has also organized a noon ceremony outdoors at the memorial garden at the home of Roger and Debby Head (2503 Ruth Road). The public will be invited and pastors from the Arab Ministerial Association will lead the ceremony and prayer.

The Spring Program for K-5th will be Wednesday, April 27th at 6:00 pm. There will be NO after-school activities that day. Children should be at the church by 5:30 pm.

Relay For Life Yard Sale – Arab First UMC will hold its annual Relay For Life yard sale on Saturday, April 30th from 8am to 2pm. (The actual Relay For Life is May 13th from 5pm to 11pm at Arab Soccer Fields.) Donations for the yard sale will be accepted the week of the yard sale.

The United Methodist Men will host a BBQ chicken luncheon on May 1st. The cost is $8 and will include chicken, 2 sides, bread, drink, and dessert. We will start serving after the 9:30 service. The proceeds will go to our various mission projects including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Room in the Inn, and our college scholarship fund.

Children’s Worship Arts – our end of year celebration will be May 4th after school. This is the last Wednesday for Worship Arts this school year.

High School Seniors! We would like to publish your senior portrait in the church newsletter and bulletin. Please email it to afumc@otelco.net or bring a senior portrait to the church office by May 6th. In addition, we would like 5 informal pictures of you during different stages of your life. These will be used for a slideshow on May 22nd.

Communion Set Up Training – We are in need of someone who would like to fill in when the one of the regular volunteers is not available. Set up includes both Saturday preparation and Sunday morning clean up/set up after each service. If you are interested in helping please contact Patty Saunders 256-200-6186. Please leave a message.

Stained glass window notecards- The Methodist Women are making available the opportunity to purchase notecards featuring Arab First UMC’s stained glass window. These notecards are printed on quality card paper and are 5 ½ inches tall by 4 inches wide with the window in color on the front and the inside blank. Notecards will be sold in packs of 10 for $10 (envelopes included) with the minimal proceeds helping support missions. It is requested that you pre-pay for the notecards that you order. Shirts and Totes – Need a gift for Mother’s Day? (Mother’s Day is May 8. Shirts and totes also make excellent gifts anytime for men or women or younger folk!) How about a shirt or tote with the church’s stained glass window on it? Shirts are available in turquoise, gold, honey, and black from adult sizes small to 2XL and youth sizes XS to XL. Cost is $15 for a shirt, $10 for a tote. All proceeds support Blessings in a Backpack.

Summer Sumatanga News – If your child is interested in attending summer camp this year, the 2016 schedule is online at www.sumatanga.org. Lee will be at Sumatanga the week of June 5th—10th if you’d like for your child to be there while someone from our church will be in the area. That week for grades 3rd– 4th there is a Taste of Camp 1 and 2, a Grand Camp 1 and 2 (grandparents and grandchild), and grades 1-3 Day Camp 2. There’ll probably be a church van traveling back and forth if you’d like your child to go. If you have any further questions, please contact Jennifer or Lee.
